John ran his eyes over the outlandish form of the dark metal spire that protruded up from the plaza. The whole thing was shaped like corded metal, with clear striations running down it from where the metal had been wrapped together.

Before now, they’d only been able to see the very top of the structure, where it narrowed to a tip. Now, John could see how it flowed down before unwinding into five tubes. Four tubes formed an arc down to the ground and pierced into the ground below, acting as support struts from their placement.

The fifth tube carried on straight down, connecting to a fifteen-foot tall arch. The space inside the arch was distorted like there was a heatwave there interfering with John’s vision.

A brilliant light flashed, followed by a crashing sound like the earth being broken apart. Blinking madly, John saw red energy sparking from the spire, flowing down and into the five tubes. Four of them carried the red energy into the earth beneath, while the fifth went straight to the arch. As the red energy fed into the dark metal of the arch, the heat distortion inside it intensified, building steadily before erupting into a glowing red disc.

John saw how the disc formed by ripping through the air, knowing instinctively that this was the daemon equivalent of their own summoning. His fears were brought to life as a dozen creatures came through the portal. Eight of them were the normal Soulless that he’d seen so many times now, humanoid husks with shrivelled skin and long claws.

The remaining four were different. They were humanoid but stood tall and without the bestial hunch of the Soulless. They also lacked the shrivelled appearance and were red-skinned with black growths all over them. The growths seemed bone-like and took many forms, from what John could see.

The Soulless were too desiccated to see their features, so this was the first time that John had seen the facial features of a daemon. Their face was more angular than a human, large square jaws filled with jagged teeth matched with wide and square eye sockets to give them a disturbing appearance.

To make matters worse, each of these new daemons was wearing patchwork armour and carried short blades that were glowing dull red with heat. They were a clear step above the Soulless.

A spray of earth from the side drew John’s gaze to where the ground around the four supporting tubes of the spire was breaking apart in places. As he watched, the familiar bestial forms of Twisted came burrowing out of the ground around the tubes. It seemed that there were about four per tube, with each of them looking slightly different but keeping to the same morphology. That meant that when he saw half-a-dozen different types of Twisted in a group, they must have come from forces brought forth by six different spires like this.

Despite John’s distraction with the spire, the fighting hadn’t stopped. The plaza was packed with daemons, and they surged forward to destroy the interlopers.
